Souvenirs (Iceland)

While doing the SIM Residency in Reykjavik, Iceland, I made a series of ceramic copies of 48 lava rocks I had collected there.  My copies were made in stoneware, which I fired and then painted with acrylic paint.  (In these images the original rocks are seen in the top row, and my copies are the bottom row.)

This is part of a series of “souvenirs” I’m making of copies of various rocks and pebbles - and potentially some sticks - I come across in my daily life.  This series will also include rocks from Toronto, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Bruno, Dawson City, and Whitehorse...and any other place I find myself in.

These Icelandic rocks and their copies were shown in a group exhibition called Jimmy and Katie in Reykjavik, Iceland, (pictured here), and in the group exhibition The Creation of Evolution at the ODD Gallery in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, curated by Lance Blomgren.  More info about the ODD Gallery exhibition here.
